Coleman Porta Potty
Ornette coleman porta potty (Fort Worth, March 9, 1930) is a saxophonist, trumpeter, violinist and composer of jazz. Founding figure of the avant-garde jazz with a quartet in which he was Don Cherry, his innovations in the field of free jazz have been as revolutionary as highly controversial. Originally inspired by Charlie Parker, began playing the alto saxophone at 14 and tenor two years later. His first musical experiences were in bands Texan R & B, among which were those of Red Connors and Pee Wee Crayton, but his tendency to be stylistically original earned him hostility among audiences and musicians. coleman porta potty moved to Los Angeles in the early fifties, where he worked as an elevator technician while studying music books. He met musicians with similar aspirations in terms of originality gral: Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Ed Blackwell, Bobby Bradford, Charles Moffett, and Billy Higgins, but it was not until 1958 (after numerous attempts to play with the best musicians in Los Angeles) in coleman porta potty got a nucleus of artists with which to play his music. Appeared for a brief period as a member of the quintet of Paul Bley at the Hillcrest Club and recorded two albums for Contemporary. With the help of John Lewis, coleman porta potty and Cherry entered the Lenox School of Jazz in 1959 and were for a long period at the Five Spot in New York, alerted the world stage that jazz about the arrival of a new and radical way to jazz. Since that time, coleman porta potty was equally qualified as a genius and fraud. Between 1959 and 1961, coleman porta potty recorded a series of albums for Atlantic that have become classics, forming a quartet with Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Scott LaFaro or Jimmy Garrison on bass and Billy Higgins or Ed Blackwell on drums, coleman porta potty created music that greatly influence many of the great improvisers of the sixties, including greats like John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy and the majority of free jazz performers of the mid-sixties. One of those records, a jam session for nearly forty minutes called Free Jazz, was performed with a double quartet with Coleman, Cherry, Haden, LaFaro, Higgins, Blackwell, Dolphy and Freddie Hubbard. In 1962, Ornette Coleman, feeling undervalued by their record company and the club where he played, he surprised the jazz world aside for a period. He began playing the trumpet and violin (playing the latter as if it were a battery), and in 1965, recorded with all these instruments with a trio of bassist David Izenzon and drummer Charles Moffett. At the end of the decade, coleman porta potty formed a quartet with tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, Haden and Blackwell and his son Denardo coleman porta potty on drums. In addition, coleman porta potty wrote some atonal classical works for chamber groups and performed a few times with Don Cherry. In the early seventies, coleman porta potty entered the second half of his career. Formed a double quartet of two guitars, two basses, two drummers and his own alto saxophone. The group, called "Prime Time", produced a dense music, loud and often ingenious, all members seemed to have a similar status, though Coleman had a more important role. Coleman called his music harmolodics, symbolizing the equal importance that had in it the harmonic, melodic and rhythmic. Technically, it has been described as free funk. Among his companions in the group were drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson and the low Jamaaladeen Tacuma, in addition to his son Denardo. Prime Time was a big influence on the music of the M-Base Steve coleman porta potty and Greg Osby. Pat Metheny (Coleman constant admirer) collaborated with him on Song X, Jerry Garcia played third guitar as a recording and Ornette occasionally met with members of his original quartet during the eighties.
